Chowning is a seasoned litigator with experience in business matters from the common to the complex, including individual and class actions involving intellectual property, partnership and contract disputes, securities and derivative cases, and employment matters.
Chowning has been recognized in Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch® in America, 2025 Edition, as well as by Super Lawyers Magazine as a Northern California Super Lawyer in 2023 and 2024, and as a Rising Star every year from 2017 to 2022. She has been included in San Francisco Magazine’s Top Women Attorneys in Northern California from 2017 to 2021. She has also been recognized by Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch® in America for Mass Tort Litigation/Class Actions from 2021 to 2023.

The Sacramento Filipino American Lawyers Association (SacFALA) is the recently formed association of Fil-Am lawyers in the Sacramento area. Comprised of attorneys, judges, and law students, it was formed to address the legal issues confronting the Filipino-American community and to meet the professional concerns of Filipino-American lawyers in the region.

John most recently served as the Chief Operating Officer of Avellino, a biotech startup company in Silicon Valley, where he was responsible for Legal, HR, and Operations that spanned the U.S., Japan, Korea, and China. Prior to his time in-house, John was a shareholder at Littler Mendelson, the world’s largest management side labor & employment law firm.
John combines this unique set of experiences in corporate executive leadership and law firm partnership to provide practical advice to his clients, spanning from publicly traded billion dollar companies to angel investor backed pre-revenue startups. For his efforts, John has been recognized as a Rising Star and Super Lawyer in Northern California by Super Lawyers Magazine.

The California Minority Counsel Program (CMCP) is a California 501(c)(6) non-profit mutual benefit corporation, dedicated to promoting diversity in the legal profession by providing attorneys of color with access and opportunity for business and professional development.
CMCP is the only state-wide organization that brings business lawyers of all races together as members and colleagues, regardless of the type of organization in which they practice, for the purpose of achieving diversity and inclusion within law firms and in-house law departments, and in the outside counsel spend of corporations and government agencies.
